The Very Reverend Douglas Wm McCaleb began his tenure as Dean of Trinity Cathedral on January 1, 2006. He was elected as the third dean in the cathedral’s history, and came to the Diocese of Southeast Florida after serving for eleven years as rector of Christ Church, in Winchester, Virginia. A native of California, the Dean earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971 and did graduate work at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He received a Master of Divinity degree from The General Theological Seminary in New York in 1987.
While in New York, Dean McCaleb served as an intern in both urban and suburban churches, as well as at a crisis shelter for teenagers. Following divinity school, he served churches in Virginia and Washington, D.C., including historic St. John’s, Lafayette Square. Before beginning his seminary studies, he served for three years as a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard and seven years as a Foreign Affairs Officer with the United States Department of Commerce.
Since his arrival in Miami, the Dean has restructured the Cathedral Chapter, initiated a new vision and mission statement, and expanded the staff to face the many challenges of being an urban cathedral in the 21st century. Significantly, the Dean and Chapter have had to address substantial damage to Trinity from Hurricane Wilma while at the same time seeking to expand and enhance the Cathedral’s ministries.
